About Crikkett
Crikkett Young is a freelance oboist and educator based in the Providence area. In over three decades in symphony orchestras, Crikkett has performed in Mexico, China, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic; and domestically has taken the stage in concert halls including Boston's Symphony Hall, Chicago's Orchestra Hall, and Providence’s own Veterans Memorial Auditorium.
After completing dual bachelor's degrees at Stanford University in Music and Civil Engineering and a Master's Degree with Distinction in Music Performance at DePaul University, Chicago, Crikkett spent three years as English horn and Assistant Principal Oboe in the professional orchestras of Monterrey and Guanajuato, Mexico. During that time, Crikkett performed for the UN Heads of State conference in Monterrey and in national festivals at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City.
After moving to Rhode Island, Crikkett established a private teaching studio and became founding Principal Oboist of the Narragansett Bay Symphony. Crikkett has performed four times as a featured soloist with NaBSCO, most notably performing Jean Françaix’s L’Horloge de Flore in 2012; Crikkett also served two terms as Vice President of the NaBSCO Board. In 2011, Crikkett joined the faculty at the Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School as an oboe teacher, and later created the “Ukulele for Grown-Ups” group class.
In addition to classical oboe pursuits, Crikkett is a songwriter, ukulele and bass guitar instructor, and plays alto saxophone with Providence’s own Extraordinary Rendition Band. Crikkett spent 2024 writing an original song every week, dubbed the “Silly Sunday Songs” project.
Since 2013, Crikkett has held many roles with RIOT Rhode Island. including Adult Rock Camp director; band coach; bass, keyboard, and ukulele instructor; and Administrative Coordinator and Program Co-Coordinator with the organization’s admin team. Starting in 2019, Crikkett taught STEAM programs for the RI Museum of Science and Art; after the museum’s unfortunate cloing, Crikkett joined the RI Computer Museum as an educator. From 2004 until 2019, at Lincoln School and St. George’s School, Crikkett taught music ensembles, theory, and history; math classes from prealgebra to advanced calculus and statistics; physics and robotics.
When taking a break from teaching and performing music, Crikkett occasionally makes time to bake a mean flourless chocolate torte.
